Websites :: Making changes to existing websites
Over the past few years I have had many enquiries from people who love the idea of my Web Builder,
BuildAWebsiteTonight.com, but they have already invested time and money into their current sites, and don't want to have to redesign them or use a new web builder.
I've been searching for one or more solutions to help these people, so that they can have the freedom of doing all their own changes and updates, just like my current clients do.
I've tested a few options, none of which has been as easy to use as I'd like. Today I've heard about another option - software which is downloaded by the client, where they can make their changes, and upload their site to the internet, with a minimum of fuss - and no html skills. It's great for Mac, Windows and Linux.
I'll test it over the coming weeks and see what I think - I'm hoping this is the perfect solution for some of my other clients who have
relocated their current websites to my hosting.
Wouldn't it be fantastic if I could offer this great new option for them to finally have total control over their current websites?
Ciao for now

Websites :: Google Page Rank
I had a question today from a client about Google Page Rank, and how to find out if you have one.
I was thinking that I'm sure a lot of people don't know anything about this, and there was a time when I didn't either.
Basically, if your site has good incoming and outgoing links, and interesting content, you will slowly start to gain credibility. Your website starts to gather page rank, and some people find this of utmost importance.
Don't worry about them - it is a measure of how popular your site is, but it is not the be all and end all. If you'd like to see if your website has page rank, there are lots of websites who offer free services to find this for you - there is no need to download any software, or pay to find this info.
OPTION 1 - See who links to youThe first place you should go to is ... of course ... Google.
Pop over to
http://www.google.com.
Instead of typing your search request, type :
link:and then type your
domain name.
Press Enter to start the search.
If you are lucky, you will find a list of websites which link to you.
OPTION 2 - See who links to you AND your Page Rank
Visit http://www.WhoLinksToMe.com
Type your domain name
Press Enter. To see the results, scroll down the page.
If you'd like to put a link on your own website so people can see what your Page Rank rating is, scroll further down to see the html code, copy it, paste into your website page/s.
To see how it works, pop over to my About page, and scroll down - I add the PR5 image with the link:
http://buildawebsitetonight.com/about.html
NOTE
You may notice that not all Page Rank websites give you the same results - don't worry about this. It does not affect your website at all.
I hope you enjoyed seeing who links to you!
Ciao for now,

Websites : Always test features before going live!
This morning I was cruising around the Control Panel of my hosting account where my website lives, and I was checking out some of the features available. There were plenty there to keep me busy for quite some time.
I noticed one I hadn't seen before, so I clicked on it to automatically set up a new option on my site, and then opened a new browser window to have a look. Holy batgirl! My site looked awful! Gosh it was quite a shock - here are the before and after photos:
BEFORE

AFTER:

Can you see why I had a mini melt down? A lot of my images went bezerko! Luckily I have a sense of humour, so quickly turned off the feature in my hosting. Phew!
Moral of the story?
Before you make a change to your website, try it first on either a sample page, or a page which gets little traffic. See if you're happy with it, and if you are, then proceed.
I could have saved myself a whole lot of angst by following this simple step this morning. :o)
